Colposcopy and Pap smear

Pap smears and colposcopy are complementary studies which helps the timely detection of HPV Virus infections.

Colposcopy is a test that allows analysis of the uterus cervix in a maximized way, through the application of solutions it enables to make evident cervical an vaginal lesions, which in most of cases are caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).

The PAP on the other hand allows us to examine the cell of the cervix, allowing detecting abnormal cell.

The PAP and colposcopy are performed in order to detect benign and malignant disease in the cervix, or uterus’s neck.

When I make a colposcopy?

  • Start the sexually active
  • Has an abnormal result on the Pap smear
  • Anomalies are detected during a gynecological exam
  • Appear bleeds without explanation (irregular bleeding)
  • You have a history of STDs (sexually transmitted diseases)
  • Required surgery of uterus (as previous examination)
  • Arise skin wounds, such as warts or sores
  • Is required to inspect the result of another medical procedure
  • Is severe pain in the vaginal area
  • There is vaginal discharge that has not be controlled by drugs

Once making a colposcopy, it is recommended to perform this procedure once a year, to rule out or treat any illness that may arise.

How do I prepare for a colposcopy?

  • Set the study for a date that will not be present the menstrual period, for which is to better observe the cervix
  • Now what not to do, is be a douche, use tampons moments before the study, and intercourse at least in a period of 24 hours
